Donata

Cared for the Town Hall

With deep sadness, and yet with gratitude for the beautiful life she shared with us, we say farewell to our dear sister and friend, who left her body at the age of 72, peacefully at her home in Samarpan , after a courageous fight with cancer, diagnosed two and a half years ago.

About

Farewell, dear Donata

She was Italian by birth, but she carried within her a truly Indian soul.

Her journey towards Auroville began many years ago. She first came to the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and Auroville in 1974, and after many years of returning and deepening her connection with this place, she finally came to stay for good in 2006, together with her beloved husband, Stefano.

For twenty years, she gave herself wholeheartedly to the work of the Town Hall. With quiet dedication, she cared for its order, cleanliness and beauty. Her work was not simply a duty — it was an offering. She brought the same care and attention to everything she touched, always with her characteristic smile.

And that smile was perhaps one of the things we will remember most. She had a natural warmth and kindness that made people feel welcome. She was always ready to help, always attentive to the needs of others, and somehow found a way to bring a little lightness and joy even into ordinary moments.

At the same time, she also took care of the Guest House of Samarpan, where she created, with love and dedication, a little paradise by the sea. Her gift for decoration and garden design transformed the surroundings into a place of beauty and peace. Her loving attention to the guests made them feel cared for and at home. The affection and appreciation she received from so many of them were a beautiful reflection of what she gave.

She lived her life here through service, beauty, friendship and love.

Now, after this long journey, she leaves us with her smile — the smile that was so much a part of her — and departs peacefully into the arms of the Mother.

We will miss her presence, her kindness, her laughter, her caring hands and that ever-present smile.

Thank you, dear sister, for all that you gave to this place and to all of us.

May you rest in peace in the Mother's arms.
