The great ode to Mother India is by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee. The original text is coupled with two variant translations by Sri Aurobindo. In addition, a text of Sri Aurobindo is included in which he speaks of Bankim as a modern Rishi and recalls the momentous role of Bande Mataram in the awakening of Bengal, “The mantra was given and in a single day a whole people were converted to the religion of patriotism”. Biographical notes on Bankim are provided.
