City Study Circle

Forum for town planning

April 27, 2001

On the 27th of April 13 people joined at the SAWCHU building. With the objective of exploring what exactly makes cities fascinating and livable, we went on a 'round the globe trip' together, - both in time and space. After strolling in small lanes, arriving at squares with unique architecture, seeing vast spaces of nature and taking in the panorama of cities, we 'returned' to Auroville refreshed and inspired.

Here are some observations made during the tour:

  • It is not only the number of people which distinguishes 'city' from 'human settlement' or 'small town'. It is the richness of expression in arts, music, architecture, and cultural exchange etc which characterise a 'city'

  • Complexity of spaces, interlocking spaces, social spaces, cultural and creative activities, multi-layered experience.

  • Blend of old and new, experience of vistas and perspectives.

  • Contrast of grandeur vis vis narrowness.

  • Out-of-scale buildings and open spaces, being elements of surprise and the unexpected.

  • Many different styles of architecture existing together.

  • Anonymity, freedom from excessively close-knit society.

  • City centres without traffic give a sense of freedom and ease.

  • Everything that nature offers should be preserved and integrated.
