Home lighting solar photovoltaic systems
Single photovoltaic panel of 35 or 75 kW is installed
together with a battery, a charge controller for the supply of DC lighting.
More sophisticated system will also include an inverter for the conversion
of DC to AC power. Approximately 150 houses in Auroville operate such
solar systems.

Solar photovoltaic pumping systems
A solar photovoltaic array of 900 or 1800 kW operates
a DC centrifugal pump of 1 or 2 Hp.
The first solar pumps were installed in the community during 1987 under
a government testing programme. Since that time considerable expertise
has been built up in this field. A continuous testing and improvement
project goes on for the promotion and installation of solar PV pumps.
CSR has installed since 1993 more than
400 solar pumping systems. While nearly 150 systems are operating within
Auroville, the rest are spread out throughout India, as far as Punjab
state.
