Pioneering projects from Auroville, India and Pakistan win
the Ashden's 'Green Oscars'

London - 24 June 2004 - The international winners of the prestigious Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy 2004 were tonight announced at the Ashden annualawards ceremony in London.

INDIA: Hemant Lamba, AuroRE, wins the award for Enterprise (£30,000) for Aurore's great triumph in acting as a catalyst for small-scale solar businesses across India, helping this vast country start to unlock its huge potential for solar power. In the words of one of the judges: "These are the guys who
make solar happen"

The Awards, hosted by John Humphrys, saw finalists gather at the Royal Geographical Society, London with guest speakers Sir David Attenborough, Jonathon Porritt, chair of the UK government's Sustainable Development Commission, and Andrew Simms, Policy Director of the New Economics Foundation, who presented findings from his latest report The Price of Power - funded by the Ashden Awards
Sir David Attenborough, who presented the prizes, commented: "I have found this evening both humbling and inspirational. We have much to learn from these remarkable award winners. I would like to thank the Ashden Awards for bringing our attention to this groundbreaking work"
The Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy - known globally as the 'Green Oscars' - now in their fourth year, reward inspirational and innovative renewable energy projects which both provide social and economic benefits to local communities and contribute towards protecting the environment by curbing deforestation and reducing our dependence on fossil fuels - thereby helping tackle climate change.

Three Awards were given in recognition of the way in which renewable energy has been used to improve access to Food and to Light, and to promote Enterprise. In addition, a Fourth Award, Climate Care, was given to a project with the potential to play a significant role in offsetting the carbon emissions which drive climate change.
For the second year running there is also a UK award in recognition of the role that industrialised nations can play in reducing greenhouse emissions
The finalists were also personally congratulated by HRH The Prince of Wales at a separate ceremony (see below 'Notes to editors' for comment from the Palace.
