The year 2003-2004 was a year of consolidation as well as development. New projects were taken up while a number of our earlier initiatives bore fruit. Most of the development took place in certain core areas - · Integral development of the students · Teacher enrichment · Community development · Physical spaces
INTEGRAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE STUDENTS
Our students come from a rural background with many of their families steeped below poverty line. Their exposure and opportunities are greatly limited compared to children from Auroville or any other city. Therefore, there is a need to complement the academic curricula with additional dimensions of learning. This year we concentrated on the following areas -
· Physical Development · Soft skills development · General Development · Environmental Awareness
Physical Development
Athletics, Team games and Martial arts - This year saw a further consolidation of the physical development program. Each child participates ever day in the two programs offered in the school - athletics and team games. This year we also incorporated martial - arts for certain age groups.Valery a Russian Aurovilian joined us to provide basket- ball training to the children.
Body awareness classes - The children have benefited greatly by the body awareness classes conducted by Karen, a Dutch newcomer to Auroville . The aim of these classes is to become conscious of the the body and other inner parts of our being. Karen holds these sessions with classes ranging from standard 3 to standard 6.
Physical Demonstration - This year the whole school put up a physical demonstration program. The program included a mix of drills, pyramid formation, yoga and body movements. The aim of the program was also to instill discipline, concentration, physical co-ordination and group effort. The children underwent a rigorous training which culminated into a performance on the first day of the Annual Sports Competition.
Lunch Program - The school now provides lunch to all the students in addition to the morning and evening snacks. Efforts are ongoing to make the food more tasty and healthy.
Soft skills development
School assemblies - Every Saturday the school assembly is conducted by the students. On this day the children take up the responsibility along with their class teacher to make special presentations in front of the whole school. The presentations usually include academic project presentations, songs, dances, quizzes, jokes, etc. It has been helpful in channelising the creative potential of the children. In addition it adds special qualities to their personality like confidence, public speaking, responsibility,group-work and leadership etc.
Cultural Programs - Thrice a year the children put up a cultural program which show various dances, dramas and songs that they have learnt in each Semester during the year.
