MANTRA

The children were taught a "light mantra" which they learnt by heart. After lighting candles each morning, they participate in their own "rituals," perhaps sitting cross-legged or simply with eyes closed, maybe even in the pose of an Indian God or Goddess. At the start of each day of the Light Project, they recite the mantra they have been taught 3 times.

Asato ma sad gamaya
Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya
Mrityorma amritam gamaya
Om shanti, shanti, shantih

From the unreal lead me to the real,
From darkness lead me to light,
From death lead me to immortality.

POEM

Rhythm is so important for children as the grow up, helping to strenghten their own sense of self and individuality. With this in mind Priya created a small poem on the "light" theme especially for the children of Class 5. A time of stillness and concentration at the close of each lesson working on the "Light project", the children would stand tall and proud, as they recited this poem learnt by heart

Within the darkness of the night,
I long to be an oil-lamp burning bright.
With flickering flames, all aglow,
Helping others see the things they know.
Oil lamp, oil lamp, burning bright,
Dancing, leaping in the night.
Help me this day grow strong and true,
Let the light of goodness now shine through.

PRAYER

Everyday of the Light Project, the children listen to the Sedlescombe School prayer recorded on a tape by their headmistress, Mrs Marion Ham.

This is our school
Let Peace and Happiness dwell here
Let the rooms be full of contentment
Let love abide here
Love for one another
Love for mankind
Love for life itself
And love of God
Just as many hands build a house
So many hearts build a school
This is our school
Let Peace and Happiness dwell here
Let Peace and Happiness dwell
In our school in Auroville
The New Creation School
Amen

LIGHT WORDS

At the beginning of the project, children from Class 6 sat down and had a brainstorming session, thinking of as many words as possible connected with the theme of light.

After writing down their words connected to light, the children wanted to create their own "light logos".
