AuroOrchard is one of the first plots of land purchased for Auroville by the Mother. Gérard has run the farm from the beginning (1969) with the help of his assistant Bithi, his mission being to feed Auroville. Christian and his wife Flore are gradually taking over this unit.
On these 45 acres of land are grown fruits (avocado, lemon, coconut, cashew, mango, watermelon...currently 5t/year) and vegetables (cucumber, different kind of beans, brinjal, lady's finger, bottle gourd, tomato, basil, spinach, spring onion, capsicum...10t/year). There is also a plot of regenerative forest and poultry producing about 200,000 eggs a year.
AuroOrchard is converting to organic since 2012, and is seeking certification through the PGS (Participatory Guarantee System) of Auroville. Vegetables and fruits are grown without any chemical input, following organic methods like mulching and BRF, compost, rotations and associations, green manures, etc. Eggs are produced according to the "AV egg" standard (free range).
Volunteers are most welcome,Monday-Friday7:30-12, but please note that AuroOrchard has no accommodation.
