Poppo Pingel (Auroville Architects Monograph Series)

by Mona Doctor-Pingel

Recently released at CEPT University, Ahmedabad by B.V. Doshi, Governing Board member and chairman of the Auroville Town Development Council, this first major monograph of Poppo’s work spans his career till date and the influences that formed him and continue to do so, as well as his contribution to Auroville. Highly personal in his approach, his work challenges the senses with its rustic quality while sensitively responding to climate, the natural landscape and spirit of the place. The monograph provides a brief biography of the architect, profiles select projects and is richly illustrated with photographs and working drawings.
This first monograph is part of a larger series documenting the works of pioneering architects of Auroville, who have dedicated a major part of their life and work to Auroville.

The monograph has been authored by Mona Doctor-Pingel, who studied at the School of Architecture (CEPT), Ahmedabad, and later obtained a Master’s degree in Appropriate Technology at the University of Flensburg, Germany. She has an independent practice in Auroville since 1995.

The book also includes essays by Suhasini Ayer-Guigan, Durganand Balsavar, Preeti Chopra, Brigitte Jacob, Wolfgang Schaeche, Elmar Schenkel, Poonam Verma Mascarenhas, and Franz Josef-Vollmer – all former students or associates of Poppo, giving an insight into the multiple layers that define his characteristic architecture.
