Birgitta Volz

The walls of normality have fallen -

age-old wisdom returns to me.

My conscience travels.

Different worlds are opening,

existing in the same rank as our reality.

Am I going mad?

Spiritual beings communicate,

protect, assist, teach.

Curiosity has taken the place of my fear.

My new-old teachers appear

and each one opens the door

yet a bit more.

Impatiently I tear it open

and fearfully I slam it shut again -

only to return once more

to watch, to learn, to understand.

Where is truth?

What is reality?

Is my mind still operative?

More and more clearly I have to tell,

whom I can share with.

Smaller and smaller the circle of those

whose boundaries are large enough.

This knowledge makes me lonely.

Some consider me insane.

Many have gone that way before,

art is the way out.

Born in Nuremberg / West-Germany

1982 Begins artistic works with woodcuts

1985 Youngest member of the Association of Professional Artists in Nuremberg

1984-88 Studies at the Würzburg College (Commercial Art), BA

1987 Guest student at the "Academia de Bellas Artes", Madrid , Spain

1988-91 MA-Programme for graphic arts at the University of Modern Arts in Kassel

1993-98 Fellowship in the House of Fine Arts, Wiesbaden

1996-97 Invitation to lecture at the College of Art , New Delhi , India , as an invited guest of the German Cultural Institute and at the University for Modern Arts in Porto , Portugal

1998 Rewarded the HAP Grieshaber Price for woodcut

1999-00 Fellowship of the Bavarian Government at the "International House of Artists - Villa Concordia" in Bamberg

2000 Awarded by the "New Saxonian Gallery" - Invitation to lecture at the College of Art in Kumasi , Ghana , as an invited guest of the German Cultural Institute and Alliance Française

2001 Fellowship of the German-Italian Institute "Villa Vigoni"

2003 Brenner's "Artists in Residence" Fellowship, Baden-Baden. Fellowship "Le Centre Est-Nord-Est"St-Jean-Port-Joli, Québec, Canada
