Art galleries cannot be
brought into every home, but, if all the appointments of our life and
furniture of our homes are things of taste and beauty, it is inevitable
that the habits, thoughts and feelings of the people should be raised,
ennobled, harmonised, made more sweet and dignified.

George Nakashima, internationally acclaimed Japanese-American woodworker,
who lived as a disciple in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, had a dream to offer
to each continent of the world: a Table for Peace - yes, a table. A table
may be an ordinary object, but in the hands of a master craftsman, especially
when one has yogic consciousness, often ordinary objects transcend their
limitations and become something else, something that is endowed with
great presence, power and meaning; almost sacred. George Nakashima was
someone with this special touch who could transform the ordinary into
extraordinary. His third Table for Peace, gifted to the Asian continent,
found its home in Auroville and remains as a great source of inspiration
for Auroville's designers and craftsmen.

…what matters most
is how things are done;
the conscious intention behind each and every detail...
We have the ideal and the reality. In the following pages we present you
the story of our Auroville home grown designers and crafts people, their
dreams and aspirations, struggles and discoveries.
